If I had a dollar for every time a parent apologized to me before their family session because they were worried their child wouldn’t cooperate, I’d probably have enough to keep my coffee cup full for a very long time.
Almost every parent tells me some version of the same thing:
“My kids are wild.”
“My toddler never sits still.”
“I’m so sorry in advance.”
And every time, my answer is the same.
They’re not supposed to sit still.
Kids Aren’t Meant to Perform
Somewhere along the way, I think we became convinced that a successful family photo session means children smiling perfectly at the camera with their hands folded in their laps.
But when I watch my own children, that is not what I see.
I see my son running as fast as his little legs can carry him.
I see my daughters making up games together and laughing so hard they can barely stand.
I see muddy boots, dirty hands, flowers picked just because they’re pretty, and tiny treasures tucked into little pockets.
That’s what childhood looks like.
It’s full of movement, curiosity, wonder, and connection.
So why would I expect children to be anything different during a family photo session?
My Philosophy Is Simple: I Meet Children Where They Are
Every child walks into a session with their own personality.
Some are adventurous.
Some are quiet observers.
Some are full of endless energy.
Some need a little extra time before they’re ready to engage.
None of those personalities are wrong.
As a family photographer, my job isn’t to change who your child is for an hour.
It’s to get to know them.
Because when children feel safe, seen, and accepted exactly as they are, they begin to trust me. That’s when the genuine smiles, belly laughs, curious expressions, and sweet snuggles naturally happen.
I don’t expect children to perform.
I create space for them to simply be themselves.
What My Sessions Actually Look Like
If you’ve never had a session with me before, you might be surprised by what we don’t do.
We don’t spend an hour asking your children to smile at the camera.
Instead, we play.
We explore.
We tell silly jokes.
We make funny noises.
We race.
We snuggle.
We look for flowers, rocks, or seashells.
We chase each other.
Sometimes we simply slow down and let your child lead the way.
From the outside, it often looks more like a family adventure than a photo session.
And honestly?
That’s exactly how I want it to feel.
Because that’s when your family forgets about the camera and starts enjoying each other.
The Best Photos Usually Happen Between the “Perfect” Moments
Some of my favorite images have never been the ones where everyone is looking at the camera.
They’re the moments in between.
The giggle after Dad tells a joke.
The toddler wrapping both arms around Mom’s neck without being asked.
A little hand reaching for yours.
Siblings laughing together over something only they understand.
A child stopping to inspect a tiny flower they found along the trail.
Those moments tell the story of your family far better than a perfectly posed smile ever could.
So… What If Your Kids Don’t Cooperate?
Here’s the secret.
They probably will.
Just not in the way you’re imagining.
Maybe they won’t sit perfectly still.
Maybe they’ll want to run.
Maybe they’ll need a cuddle halfway through.
Maybe they’ll tell me all about dinosaurs or princesses or the stick they found five minutes earlier.
And all of that is okay.
Actually…
It’s more than okay.
It’s exactly what childhood looks like.
Years from now, I don’t think you’ll wish your children had smiled at the camera for five more minutes.
I think you’ll be grateful you can remember the way they laughed, the way they ran, the way they reached for your hand, and the way they loved you in this season of life.
Those are the moments worth preserving.
And those are the moments I’m always looking for.
If you’ve been putting off family photos because you’re worried your children won’t sit still or smile perfectly, I hope this encouraged you to let go of that pressure.
Childhood is meant to be messy, playful, curious, and full of movement. Those are the moments that tell your family’s story, and they’re the moments I love to photograph.
If you’re looking for a relaxed, connection-focused family photographer in Poulsbo, Kitsap County, Seattle, or Tacoma, I’d love to help you capture this season just as it is.
